David Ashdown

Regarded as one of Britain’s best sports photographers was the Chief Sports Photographer for The Independent and The Independent on Sunday. He joined the Independent at the launch and was its longest serving staffer.

He left the Star newspaper in 1986 to join the Independent after starting his career as a motorcycle messenger for the Keystone Press agency in 1968.

He was a multi award winning photographer claiming the Sports Photographer of the year award in 1998 and other prestigious awards such as the International Olympic Committees worldwide ‘Best of Sport’ award and Ilford Photographer of the Year and the European Sports Photographer of the Year and he was Nikon Sports Photographer of the Year on four occasions.
