The Independent

When The Independent newspaper arrived it was as if someone had lit the fuse on a firework.

The dramatic use of pictures across many columns of the broadsheet newspaper were a revelation and other broadsheets tried to keep up with the trend.

For a little while the photographers on a newspaper were the stars of the show and not just there to fill spaces.

We at Fleets Streets Finest are privileged to bring you a little of the flavour of the work that made the ‘Indy’ and its photography the talk of the town and set the pace for newspapers for a decade.

  • London May 8th 1945 Northcliffe Collection Study these faces closely and you can see the joy, the relief, the exuberance, the hope for the future that was brought about on May 8th 1945. Thousands of people gathered in London, and crowds of around 50,000 brought the traffic around Piccadilly Circus to a standstill . This is one of the hundreds of images in the Northcliffe Archive taken on the day by photographers from the Daily Mail. Sadly, recording which of the many photographers who were on duty that day for the Daily Mail was not one of the priorities so we are unable to say who took this photograph.
